Our current projects
The first funding project of the Büttner-Janz Spinefoundation, which has already been completed, supported elite sports in Germany. In collaboration with the German Sports Aid Foundation (Stiftung Deutsche Sporthilfe), an anonymous online survey was conducted among Germany’s top athletes as part of a publication promotion. The survey results were published in the European Spine Journal. The raw data from the survey are presented here. In a second, long-term funding project, the Büttner-Janz Spinefoundation is dedicated to supporting doctoral students at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin. To this end, the Büttner-Janz Spinefoundation developed an online meta-analysis database for systematic reviews and meta-analyses on the biomechanics, diagnostics, and conservative and surgical treatment of the spine. The goal is to produce doctoral dissertations and monographs featuring new findings on the spine.

The second publication (first author S.A.J.L.), for which data comparing three surgical methods were calculated in the meta-analysis database and graphically presented in the publication, appeared in 2021 in the European Spine Journal: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33837832/
The third publication (candidate M.K.) appeared in 2022 and compared two surgical methods widely used worldwide. The publication resolved discrepancies found in previous meta-analyses: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35699832/. Two additional doctoral dissertations are currently being prepared as meta-analysis reviews, with the advantage that they can build on existing expertise, thereby shortening the completion time.
The third funded project involves providing technical and financial support for a planned, large-scale survey on the prevalence of spinal problems in the general population, including postoperative infections. People with severe back pain experience limitations in their quality of life and functional capacity, as well as in their professional and social lives. The aim is to determine the extent to which this is true and to what degree treatments for spinal disorders lead to an improvement in quality of life. Additionally, the effectiveness of measures to prevent spine-related pain is of interest. The goal is to advance knowledge for better spinal health among the general population.
